ATHLETIC BLBAO UEFA CUP 1986-1986

In the 15th edition of the UEFA Cup, the Basques of Athletic Bilbao faced the Belgians of Liège in the round of 16. Bilbao easily made it through to the round of 8, from which they were eliminated by Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. That UEFA Cup was won by Real Madrid, who defeated German champions Cologne in the two-match final. Athletic’s pennant shows the distinctive red and white vertical stripes with the team’s coat of arms in the centre. The latter, first used in 1922, takes up the coats of arms and colors present in the town heraldry and that of Biscay. From the shield of Bilbao, it takes the bridge and the church of San Anton, and the wolves of the powerful Haro family, lords of Biscay and founders of Bilbao in 1300. From the Shield of Biscay, he takes the Gernikako Arbola (Guernica tree) and the cross of St. Andrew. The match on 6 November was played in Bilbao and the red – white won 3–1, repeating the success already achieved in the Belgian away game. The red – white stadium was the S.Mames so named because of the presence in the area of a church built to honor St. Mames a saint that legend tells the Romans fed the lions who, miraculously, did not slaughter him. Lions is also the nickname given to the players of this team who have made autarchy their own pride.
