La nazionale Verdeoro, come si usa chiamarla in Italia in riferimento ai colori della casacca, è una delle nazionali di calcio più titolate del mondo nonché quella più titolata nel campionato mondiale, vinto per 5 volte (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 e 2002).
Per questa ragione i giocatori del Brasile sono soprannominati Pentacampeões (“Pentacampioni”). Il Brasile è, insieme all’Italia, una delle due nazionali che si sono aggiudicate il titolo mondiale per due volte consecutive, nel 1958 e nel 1962.
Unica nazionale ad aver partecipato a tutte le edizioni del mondiale, in bacheca annovera anche 9 Coppe America e 4 Confederations Cup (primato).
Vanta la disputa di sette finali del campionato del mondo e undici piazzamenti complessivi nei primi quattro posti della competizione in ventidue partecipazioni (solo la nazionale tedesca ha fatto meglio, con tredici piazzamenti complessivi in venti partecipazioni).
