Il 16 ottobre del 1996 il Milan incontra, per una gara della fase a gironi della Champions League, il Goteborg. Era il Milan diretto da Oscar Washington Tabarez poi avvicendato in Dicembre da Arrigo Sacchi. Il Milan fu battuto dagli svedesi per 2-1 dopo l’iniziale vantaggio ad opera di Weah. Il cammino nella competizione dei rossoneri ma anche dei “blavitt” come sono soprannominati dai tifosi svedesi, terminò alla fase a gironi che vide promossi il Porto insieme, con grande sorpresa, ai norvegesi del Rosenborg. Il gagliardetto degli svedesi consegnato al capitano del Milan Paolo Maldini riportava lo stemma dei due club su sfondo bianco e azzurro con i dettagli della competizione e la data dell’incontro.

On 16 October 1996, AC Milan met Gothenburg for a group stage match in the Champions League. It was Ac Milan directed by Oscar Washington Tabarez then replaced in December by Arrigo Sacchi. AC Milan were beaten 2-1 by the Swedes after Weah’s initial lead. The journey in the competition of the Rossoneri but also of the “blavitt” as they are nicknamed by swedish fans, ended in the group stage that saw Porto promoted together, to great surprise, with the Norwegians of Rosenborg.
