Il calcio ad Imola nasce dalla ferma volontà del giovane imolese Piero Toschi il quale, dopo aver assistito ad un incontro di calcio, rimase particolarmente affascinato tanto da diffonderne la pratica in città insieme a un gruppo di amici. Terminata la prima guerra mondiale, nel 1919, Toschi con alcuni appassionati fonda l’Imola Football Club assegnando alla compagine i simboli della città ovvero i colori rosso e blu del gonfalone nonché il grifone presente sulle insegne cittadine. Il grifo, animale mitologico, rappresenta i valori di custodia e vigilanza e pronto anche a combattere, come raffigurato con la spada impugnata, per la libertà cittadina. Questo simbolo da sempre accompagna le insegne della squadra e il gagliardetto di questa settimana, risalente agli anni sessanta, ne è un piccolo esempio. Stranamente questo stendardo, con la denominazione Associazione Calcio Imola – in uso a partire dal 1963 fino al 1960 – riporta il 1915 quale anno di costituzione della squadra.
Con lo spirito generoso proprio dei veri appassionati del calcio, i soci fondatori, con un azionariato popolare, rimpinguarono le casse della neonata società che scelse come terreno di gioco un’area cittadina lambita dal Santerno, il corso d’acqua che attraversa la città. Nella stessa area sorge oggi il Parco delle Acque Minerali dove si trova non solo lo stadio Romeo Galli ma anche l’autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari che sfiora il campo di calcio.
La storia sportiva dell’Imola F.C., oggi Imolese F.C. 1919, ha raggiunto il suo massimo livello con il terzo posto in serie C guadagnato nella stagione 2018-2019. Attualmente la squadra milita nel girone B della serie C.
THE GRIFFINS OF THE SANTERNO
Football in Imola was born in 1919, the year of the foundation of the association strongly desired by the young Imola-born Piero Toschi who, in 1914, was particularly fascinated, after having attended a football match, so as to spread the practice in the city, with of a group of friends. At the end of the First World War, in 1919, Toschi and a group of young people from Imola founded the Imola Football Club, assigning to the team the symbols of the city or the red and blue colors of the banner as well as the griffin on the city signs. The griffin, a mythological animal, represents the values of custody and vigilance and is ready to fight, as depicted with a sword in hand, for city freedom. This symbol has always accompanied the insignia of the Imola club and this week’s pennant, dating back to the sixties, is a small example. With the generous spirit of true football fans, the founding members, with a popular shareholding, filled the coffers of the newborn team that chose as their playground a city area lapped by the Santerno, the river that crosses the city.
In the same area today stands the “Parco delle Acque Minerali” where not only the Romeo Galli stadium is located but also the Enzo and Dino Ferrari racetrack that borders the football field. The sporting history of Imola F.C., today Imolese F.C. 1919, reached its highest level among competitions with the third place in Serie C earned in the 2018-2019 season. Currently the team plays in group B of Serie C.
